Crime in New Zealand - breakdown by Ethnicity and Crime Type - Totals and Per-100k

What with all the talk about how Cis White Males are responsible for the violence in the world, and the claims that Police 10-7 was “racist”, I decided to take a look at the Offender Demographics page on the NZ Police Data site.

As a spoiler/TL;DR: For Europeans (white people) to be over-represented in these stats, their section of the pie would need to be greater than their section of the Population pie (63.02%). There are no Main Heading Offences where this is the case.

For Police 10-7s portrayal of how ever many brown people Efeso Collins et al decided met the “Racist” quota, Maori would have to be under-represented in that Offense. There is only one Main Heading, where Maori are not heavily over-represented: Sexual Assault and Related Offences, where Indian is the most per-100,000. Maori come second. (Same with “Miscellaneous”).

For the most “violent” crimes of Homicide and Acts Intended to Cause Injury, the most Offences listed were committed by Maori. Europeans did come second in raw totals.

I have chosen to ignore the Sex distribution in this dive, and only look at the Ethnic Group breakdowns. The pie chart is built from the data from the relevant Offence heading on the Police site, which is screenshotted next to each graph. Next to THAT one is the per-100k graph which shows how many offences are committed per 100,000 people in that group.

The source for this is the 2018 Census, which gave the following (as MELA is not an ethnicity in the Police Stats, it has been combined with Other):

**Update 1725 13/05: as kindly (and painstakingly, because I couldn’t see it) pointed out to me by @IPSCRaymond, the per-100k for Homicide was referencing the wrong numbers for the Ethnicity Cohorts, and showed Maori and European almost equal on 2.8:2.0 respectively. The actual ratio is 12.24:2.0 Maori:European for Homicides.
