Introduction:
With all the talk about how Cis White Males are responsible for the violence in the world, I decided to take a look at the Offender Demographics page on the NZ Police Data site.
As a spoiler/TL;DR: For Europeans (white people) to be over-represented in these stats, their section of the pie would need to be greater than their section of the Population pie (63.02%). There are no Main Heading Offences where this is the case.
In the last version of this data, there was only one category where Maori did not top the offending per-capita: Sexual Assault and Related Offences. As Rawiri Waititi told us, Maori are superior, and I can confirm this, in that they topped the Sexual Assault and Related Offences and ALL OTHER Offending Categories for the year to September 2023.
For the most “violent” crimes of Homicide and Acts Intended to Cause Injury, the most raw Offences listed were committed by Maori. Europeans did come second in raw totals.
I have chosen to ignore the Sex distribution in this dive, and only look at the Ethnic Group breakdowns.
The column graphs show the per-100k value which shows how many offences are committed per 100,000 people in that group. It removes the factor of the population sizes being different, and shows the rate of offending for each ethnicity.
